Anil Menon

President, Smart+Connected Communities

Deputy Chief Globalization Officer, Cisco

As President, Smart+Connected Communities (S+CC), Anil Menon is responsible for developing strategy and for leading the S+CC initiative -- the information technology-based framework for organizing and addressing the critical challenges of today’s cities worldwide – such as those related to providing healthcare, education, transportation, energy and resource management, and physical safety and security in the face of rapid urbanization.

Under Anil’s leadership, Cisco and its ecosystem of partners collaborate with city leaders to develop solutions that leverage the Internet as the platform for gathering and processing data - from a growing number of connected digital devices, people, and processes (“The Internet of Everything”) -- and extend the reach of information, expertise, and services across communities – taking the form of connected healthcare, connected learning, smart workspaces, virtual city hall, intelligent buildings and homes and more. S+CC also affords city managers improved visibility into their city’s myriad processes, events, and systems to help drive economic, social and environmental sustainability. Cisco has undertaken more than 100 such S+CC projects and is widely acknowledged as an industry and thought leader in this arena.

Anil also serves as the Cisco Deputy Chief Globalization Officer. The charter of this office is to enable transformation by aligning Cisco technology and business architectures with each nation’s long- and medium-term priorities. As executive sponsor of emerging countries initiatives, Anil is responsible for identifying transformational opportunities in such emerging country groupings as BRIC‐M (Brazil, Russia, India, China and Mexico) and TIPSS (Turkey, Indonesia, Poland, Saudi Arabia and South Africa).

Prior to joining Cisco, Anil was IBM’s Vice President of Corporate Strategy in Growth Markets. In his seven years with IBM, he held critical global roles at both corporate and business-unit levels. Appointed by the CEO, Anil also served as a key member of the IBM Strategy Team from 2005 to 2008.

Anil was previously a successful academic and business consultant. He was on the graduate faculty in marketing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (US) and later rose to head of the marketing department. From 1994 to 1996, Anil served as a Sony Fellow in Business Strategy with Sony Corporation. He has been on the executive committee of the Council on Strategic Planning at the Strategy Planning Institute, an international business think tank originating from the Harvard Business School.
